Evaluating Tradeoffs

Most decisions involve tradeoffs of some kind and hence, an important step in SDM involves evaluating tradeoffs and making value-based choices. However, the three workshops did not look into tradeoffs in detail. As part of a full SDM process, participants were asked to weight the different objectives in terms of their importance to the adaptation decisions that are under consideration.

As a first step, however, participants were asked to evaluate objectives in terms of the following four considerations:

  1. The importance of the objective;
  2. The urgency of the action under consideration;
  3. The relevance of the action to the decisions; and
  4. The quality and availability of data.
