Objectives

Through community consultations, the planning team developed a set of objectives for the plan which are summarized in Table 1. The community engagement process involved a number of meetings with community members, Municipal Council, the Hunters & Trappers Association, and other stakeholder groups. Planners also visited the Arnaqjauaq School where younger members of the community were consulted. This group showed great interest in what the Action Plan would mean for their community.

Together, these stated objectives signify the values that matter to the community when considering the climate adaptation choices that they face. They can help to create better alternatives, consider the trade-offs between them and develop criteria to judge whether one alternative is better than another.

Community engagement was deemed a crucial part of the planning process in developing the community’s management capacity to plan, and implement adaptation in operations in a manner that increases the overall community’s adaptive capacity and resiliency to climate change impacts. The plan was created in several stages with continuous consultation with the community to ensure that the views of stakeholders were well accounted. Care was taken so that every section of the draft plan was understood when it was reviewed with community members before the final review and submission.
